When you consider your SEO strategies and plans, there is a massive amount of work that has to be done to make the campaign a roaring success. And whilst there is a never ending amount of advices and tips out there it is sometimes best to go back to basics and think about the simpler aspects of SEO. An all singing and dancing website is all very well but no matter how many keywords you optimize and how great your content is without some off page SEO work you are always going to struggle to hit the heady heights of top rankings.

For those of you who are new to this there are two types of SEO. On page is the work that is done to an actual website’s content to increase its ranking and off page SEO is work that is done with other websites to help your site climb the ladder. This is done by building links to your pages through various other media such as blogs and social sites. Search engines prefer a website that is popular with other sites and if a top site has a link to your site they will value your content higher.

This might seem a little unfair as if you have put lots of good SEO work into your site then it should be ranked well and this is certainly true. However without the use of off page SEO it will never reach its true potential. Competitors are unlikely to be using just one medium to push their sites and neither should you.

It must now be time for a comparison to fully explain things so here we go.

If you look at some of the world’s finest ever sports people or teams then their successes didn’t just come from a good performance on match day. Sure they have the talent and, in some cases, a bit of luck but they also do plenty of behind the scenes practice. To beat a rival they had to work harder at getting to where they wanted to be. Who was it who said “the more practice I do the luckier I get”? Don’t answer that. Anyway this is similar to how off page SEO works and the more that you do the more successful your website will become.

As with sport the participants will have good match days and bad and off page SEO is not guaranteed. But if you have a good product and have composed a decent site then off page SEO will work wonders. To carry on the sport comparison your work here is never finished. Updating and adding new content to a site is essential and so are checking, adding and sometimes cutting your links.

You may now be sitting there thinking “well that’s just great but where are the tips and advice on how to improve my off page SEO presence?” The truth is that there are plenty of others out there who will gladly post page upon page of advice on this topic and what I’m trying to do here is to highlight the importance of this topic and get you started.

So get out there and research off page SEO because it is the only way to beat those rivals.
