Anyone can do search engine optimization for their website, and many amateurs and small business owners achieve great success through learning about and implementing good SEO techniques. Oftentimes, however, people misunderstand SEO and make very big mistakes. These SEO mistakes won’t help your website, and in some cases they may actually harm it, so avoid them at all costs.
Low-Quality Content
When it comes to search engine optimization, content is king. Perhaps the biggest SEO mistake that people make is failing to develop high-quality content for their websites. Some people incorrectly believe the only thing that matters about content is how many keywords there are. In order to achieve a high rank, you need high-quality content for two reasons. Search engine spiders will detect content that is stuffed with keywords, and high-quality content is what will naturally attract people to your website.
Failing to Use Meta Tags
There are some places that your keywords should be used generously. You must take advantage of meta tags, including title tags and description tags. Meta tags are what the search engines use to categorize webpages. They look to meta tags to help them determine what your website is about and what keywords it applies to. While meta tags are not everything, a big mistake that people make is failing to recognize just how important meta tags are, and failing to use them to their site’s advantage.
Choosing Poor Keywords
Keywords are obviously a critical element of SEO, and the keywords you choose will affect the success of your efforts. Even if you create high-quality content and use meta tags, for example, you won’t achieve the results you’re looking for if you’re using poor keywords. Strong keywords are words and phrases that are targeted to your customers and your niche, and the strongest keywords are used in searches often but also have few other websites competing for them. To choose a good keyword, you need to focus on volume and sales conversions, and not just consider general search terms.
Expecting Immediate Results
If you’re doing everything you should be doing for a successful SEO campaign, you will be successful. A very big misunderstanding that some people have, however, is that they’ll achieve results of higher rankings and more traffic immediately. SEO is a long-term plan, and it takes time to become effective. Unfortunately, some people will give up trying if they aren’t seeing the results they want right away. SEO must be built up gradually over a period of time and maintained in order to succeed.
Using Improper Methods
When people are impatient and believe SEO isn’t working quickly enough, some resort to using improper methods of SEO. Black hat techniques are meant to artificially raise a website’s search ranking by trying to trick the search engines into considering it more of an authority than it really is. While sometimes black hat SEO can work and work well, it is very risky business. If you’re caught using improper methods, most search engines will kick you out of their results pool altogether.
